Problem Description
- Case #005
- Fault Name: Battery Charges Too Slowly
- The customer complains that the battery takes "forever" to charge. Even during peak sun hours with massive PV generation, or when charging from the grid, the battery only absorbs a very small amount of power (e.g., 1kW). The rest of the PV energy is either wasted (clipped) or exported to the grid, leaving the battery unready for the night.
Symptoms
- PV arrays are producing 5kW, house load is 0.5kW, but battery charging power is only 1kW (wasting 3.5kW).
- The charging current on the inverter screen is steady but unusually low (e.g., stuck at 20A for a 200Ah battery).
- The battery temperature might be slightly elevated.
Possible Causes
- Inverter Parameter Limit: The installer forgot to change the default "Max Charge Current" in the inverter (often defaults to a safe 20A or 25A) to match the battery's actual capacity.
- BMS Thermal Throttling: The battery is too hot (e.g., >45°C) or too cold (<10°C). The BMS actively throttles down the Charge Current Limit (CCL) to protect the lithium cells.
- Cable Voltage Drop: The DC cables between the inverter and battery are too thin or too long. The high resistance causes the inverter to think the battery has reached its target voltage prematurely, thus reducing the current.
- Grid Charge Limit: If charging from the grid, the inverter's "Max Grid Charge Current" is set separately and might be limited to prevent tripping the house's main breaker.
How to Verify
First, check the Inverter's "Max Charge Current" setting. Second, look at the BMS data page on the inverter to see what CCL the battery is requesting. Third, touch the battery case and check the BMS temperature reading to rule out thermal throttling.
Required Tools
- Inverter App / LCD Menu
- BMS PC Software
- Infrared Thermometer
Normal Values
- Charge Current: Should track PV surplus up to the set limit (e.g., 0.5C, meaning 100A for a 200Ah battery).
- BMS CCL: Usually 100A or 200A depending on the pack.
- Battery Temp during charge: 15°C to 35°C.
- PV surplus is 4kW, but charge current is rigidly flat at exactly 20A.
- BMS CCL requests 100A, but inverter only outputs 20A.
- Battery temp is 48°C and BMS is actively pulling the CCL down to 10A.
Diagnostic Procedure
- Step 1: Check if the inverter's "Max Charge Current" is the bottleneck. (e.g., Inverter set to 20A, BMS asking for 100A = Actual charge is 20A).
- Step 2: If the inverter is set to 100A, check the BMS CCL. If the BMS CCL is dropping (e.g., requesting only 15A), check the battery temperature and individual cell voltages.
- Step 3: Measure the voltage at the inverter terminals and the battery terminals. If there is a >1.0V difference during charge, your cables are too thin, causing premature current tapering.
Root Cause
Slow charging is rarely a hardware fault; it is almost always a software limit. The final charging current is always the lowest value between the Inverter's setting, the BMS's dynamic CCL limit, and the available power source. A lazy installer forgetting to change the default 25A setting to 100A is the #1 cause worldwide.
Corrective Actions
- Fix Inverter Limits: Go to the Inverter battery setup and change the Max Charge Current to match the battery specification (usually 0.5C, so 50A for a 100Ah battery).
- Thermal Management: If the BMS is thermal-throttling, improve ventilation around the battery cabinet or install exhaust fans.
- Upgrade Cables: If significant voltage drop is detected, upgrade the DC cables (e.g., to 2/0 AWG or 4/0 AWG) to ensure efficient high-current transfer.
⚠ ⚠️ Do not set the charge current higher than what the battery manufacturer recommends (typically Max 0.5C to 1.0C for LFP). Pushing 200A into a single 100Ah module will severely overheat the cells and drastically shorten their lifespan.
💡 💡 “A slow charge is just the system obeying orders.” Whenever a customer says the battery charges too slowly, check the software limits first. Remember the "Rule of the Lowest": The inverter will only output the lowest number among [Available PV], [Inverter User Setting], and [BMS CCL Request]. Finding which one of these three is the bottleneck solves the problem in 5 minutes.
